Michigan News Anchor Jim Matthews Killed In Attempted Murder-Suicide

Jim Matthews was the overnight news anchor for nearly seven years.

One person is dead, and four are in the hospital after authorities say a 54-year-old man attacked a woman, her children, and the children’s father, reported to be WWJ-AM (950) evening anchor Jim Matthews. A 35-year-old woman, a 10-year-old boy, and a 5-year-old girl are at a nearby hospital receiving treatment, according to authorities. The woman and the 10-year-old boy are in critical condition due to blunt force trauma. The 5-year-old girl and the suspect are stable at the hospital. The incident happened Friday (Sept. 23) at a home in Chesterfield Township. Police said this was an attempted murder-suicide that stemmed from a domestic situation. Authorities were called around noon to Hidden Harbor Condominiums after the woman escaped the home with her 5-year-old daughter. The woman was able to call 911 thanks to help from a car driving by. When authorities reached the house, they found the woman’s son, 10, tied up in a closet with blunt trauma injuries and 57-year-old Matthews dead. The suspect, who police have not named, was found in the home’s basement, where it appeared he had overdosed on heroin and attempted to commit suicide. Chesterfield police officer on the scene of the incident/ Photo Mat Otiz, Detroit NewsBrian Bassett, the township’s public safety director, said, “Our investigation has determined this is an isolated tragedy that does not present a danger to our community at this time,” Bassett said during a news conference Friday afternoon. “The Chesterfield Public Safety Department will not rest until we receive justice for our victims.” The investigation is ongoing.
